A seminar-course on “Data Journalism Skills” was held in Aghveran on November 24-25, organized by “Summary Media” in cooperation with the Friedrich Ebert Foundation (FES) in Armenia. The training was conducted by Suren Deheryan, Editor of Ampop.am<\/a> data news website, and Astghik Gevorgyan, journalist of the same website.<\/span><\/p>\n

Participants from various organizations and media outlets were introduced at the beginning of the course in a different format than usual. They were asked to draw an infographic about themselves in ten minutes, using as few words and as many pictures as possible.<\/p>\n

Gradually approaching the main topic of the seminar, Suren Deheryan explained the necessity and importance of data journalism in the modern world.<\/p>\n

A seminar-course on “Data Journalism Skills” was held in Aghveran on November 24-25, organized by “Summary Media” in cooperation with the Friedrich Ebert Foundation (FES) in Armenia. Participants from various organizations and media outlets were introduced at the beginning of the course in a different format than usual. They were asked to draw an infographic about themselves in ten minutes, using as few words and as many pictures as possible.<\/p>\n

Gradually approaching the main topic of the seminar, Suren Deheryan explained the necessity and importance of data journalism in the modern world.<\/p>\n

“Every day, every second, megabytes of data from different fields are added around the world. We are both the bearer and the creator of that data. But big data is usually created by special centers that work with numbers. They are provided to much narrower professional circles, which, if presented in a simple and accessible way, may be of interest to a larger audience, “Deheryan said.<\/p>\n

According to Suren Deheryan, journalists try to mediate in processing such data and presenting it to the public in a simple format, which is necessary for the correct and well-founded public opinion.  for decoration.<\/p>\n

Astghik Gevorgyan showed with international and local examples what literate graphics are and how to get them.<\/p>\n

“Depending on the topic and our purpose, we can use different types of schedules. But first we must understand what we want to show with them. Comparison, distribution, dynamics or something else? \u201dAstghik explained.<\/p>\n

Participant Arusyak Kapukchyan, who studies at YSU Faculty of Journalism, highlighted the practical skills acquired while working with statistical data, noting that they can be used everywhere, especially in her journalistic materials.<\/p>\n

According to YSU lecturer Arman Gharagulyan, a specialist in social philosophy, philosophers and journalists are engaged in the same work. they explore society in the hope of making it better. The lecturer mentioned that based on the knowledge he has gained, he is already preparing small research assignments, which will be given to students during the study of methodological subjects.<\/p>\n

Political scientist by profession, journalist of erit.am website Gayane Melikyan mentioned that by collecting information, a person creates a summary version of information, automatically becoming its new source. He was sincere. “If two years ago I had the skills to make infographics, I would definitely apply for my master’s thesis, but of course, it is not too late now. It may be useful in postgraduate studies as well. \u201d<\/p>\n

At the end of the training, the participants suggested topics on which the covered materials will be posted by LHA  Ampop.am:<\/a>  data media site.<\/p>\n
