The family of Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink, assassinated in 2007, has given its support to two prominent journalists who were arrested at the weekend in connection with an alleged coup plot.<\/p>\n

The arrests of Nedim \u015eener and Ahmet \u015e\u0131k has sparked widespread anger among press circles and nongovernmental associations. Journalists protested their colleagues\u2019 arrests Sunday in front of the courthouse in Istanbul\u2019s Be\u015fikta\u015f district, joined by Dink\u2019s brother Khosrov Orhan Dink, who waited with the rest of the group until the first morning light to learn the court\u2019s decision and offer his support to \u015eener and \u015e\u0131k.<\/p>\n

Dink\u2019s wife, Rakel Dink, also visited \u015eener\u2019s wife in order to give her support.<\/p>\n

\u015eener previously faced trial for a book he wrote about the Dink murder case, in which he was accused of \u201cmaking targets of civil servants,\u201d \u201cobtaining secret documents\u201d and \u201cexposing secret documents.\u201d He was acquitted on all charges in June 2010.<\/p>\n

In his column in daily Posta on Feb. 25, \u015eener wrote that there were threats made against him after it was revealed that police accused of negligence in Dink\u2019s murder were also involved in the Ergenekon inquiry.<\/p>\n

Turkish journalists\u2019 organizations on March 6 visited the homes of two reporters to show their support for their colleagues\u2019 families and protest their arrests in an alleged coup plot.<\/p>\n

The demonstrations in protest of \u015e\u0131k and \u015eener\u2019s arrests will continue, the journalists said in a press statement accompanying Sunday\u2019s events, which were organized by the Turkish Journalists Association, or TGC, the Turkish Journalists Union, or TGS, the Press Council and several other nongovernmental organizations.<\/p>\n

The journalists\u2019 unions said they would come together in Istanbul on March 8 to plan a demonstration schedule in protest of the latest arrests, and against other recent interventions in the freedom of the press in Turkey.<\/p>\n

International press freedom organizations and Western observers, including the U.S. Embassy in Turkey, has condemned the Turkish government\u2019s harassment of journalists, Hurriyet Daily News reported.<\/p>\n
