Great Cinema in Yerevan:

Golden Apricot 6th international film festival will be launched on July 12. Films of both renowned and still non-revealed directors will be screened within festival frameworks. Overall 110 films from 40 countries will be shown during the seven days of the festival in Yerevan cinema halls. The organizers assure that the number of applications submitted for participation in the festival has been almost four times more. The film by French director Laurent Tuel “Le Premier Cercle”, where the lead role of an Armenian gangster Milo Malakian has been played by the famous French actor Jean Reno, will open the festival. Though neither Tuel, nor Reno participate in the festival, the film producer, French-Armenian distributor Alain Terzian will visit Yerevan.

“This is a new film, it was produced this year and the lead actor embodies an Armenian personage. That is why we applied to the film director to show his film during the festival. But one of the main reasons is also that the film producer is an Armenian famous in the world as a great cinematographer,” says Seda Papoyan, the Press Secretary of the film festival Golden Apricot.

Producer Alain Terzian is also one of the managers of the Cannes Film Festival, the President of the production company “Alter Films” and Cesar Academy, who has been heading the French Producers’ Association for many years. As well as in previous years this year Golden Apricot will have 3 competitive sections – International Feature, Documentary Films and Armenian Panorama. As part of “A Day in Europe” program this year the best European films of French, German, Dutch and Polish origin will be shown.

Special attention will deserve Polish Cinema booming recently in Europe and in the world in general. Among them films directed by Jerzy Skolimovsky will be involved. The author himself will be present in his films’ screening. The festival will host also Russian director Sergey Salavyov whose last works are “Anna Karenina” and “Assa 2”. The films will be shown as part of a non-competitive program. A novelty for the festival will be the program entitled “Masters” which will represent films dedicated to 3 renowned directors – Jean-Louis Bunuel, Michelangelo Antonioni and Tonino Guerra.

Another innovation within frameworks of “Golden Apricot” this year will be the informational program “Made in Armenia” which will involve films produced during the recent years by Armenian National Cinema-Center and “Hayq” documentary film studio. And Armenian version of the film “Color of pomegranates” will be shown regarded to the 85th birth anniversary of Sergey Parajanov as well as the 40th anniversary of the mentioned film. This way the organizers want to provide a special honor to the great director and his film. As well as last year the audience will be presented the movie program “Arab Nights”, which, according to the organizers, provides balance between the eastern and western films participating in the festival.

This year “Golden Apricot” will draw a special attention also to the renowned names of Armenian Cinema marking the 80th anniversary of the filmmakers Bagrat Hovhannisyan and Arman Manaryan via retrospective screening of their films.
