Every day, Giorgi, 17, a guy in blue jacket and hat walks with his poodle along the street Vazha Pshavela in Tbilisi. Daizy is one year old and has white shiny hair. She can stand on its two paws. Giorgi says it’s his grandma’s poodle, but she died recently and he decided to look after Daizy. Giorgi spends much time with the dog and says it’s very difficult to take care of dogs, especially when keeping themat home.
“My mom doesn’t like dogs, she hates wool and says that one day I will get some kind of disease, because I spend much time with Daizy, though once a year I take her to the clinic and always wash my hands after play with her. I think that’s enough,” says Giorgi with a smile on his face.
Grigori Zaranyan, a veterinary of the “ZooPlaza” clinic is sure that once a year is not enough, because even if the dog is vaccinated, it doesn’t mean it is safe from infecting more than 200 diseases which can be passed from pets to people.
The veterinaries say that dogs should be vaccinated up to six months, then before appearance of their first fangs they should be vaccinated against rabies. The most common infection among dogs is meshelioz, when the dog gets thinner and loses its hair in a short time. It’s deadly and very often veterinaries have to strew them.

Veterinary David Chikladze of the pets’ shop “Lord Lamari” says he has noticed that at present more people in Georgia tend to keep pets than, for instance, in last five years. Everyday they accept nearly 10 to 15 “patients” and it’s really a progress, but unfortunatly they don’t have any kind of statistics on people keeping pets in Tbilisi, says Chikladze.
“Here people are really fond of keeping pets at home. They like to walk with them, show them to their friends and even buy clothes for them suitable for all seasons. But this is not enough. Their patrons should also take them to the clinic,” says the pets’ shop veterinary David Chikladze.
Khatuna, 20, has a dog of Shar pei breed. Its name is Gio. She has time to follow all these rules. Her Gio had some problems with eyes, but now it’s ok. Khatuna says she is informed on how to keep pets, that’s why she tries to be more careful towards her own and her pet’s health.
“As soon as I notice any health problem with my “baby”, I take it to the clinic. I would rather spend those 10-15 lari (about $9US) on the vaccine, than a week to go to the café, because if my pet is healthy, I’m healthy, too. Healthy people have healthy pets,” says Khatuna with the dog in her hands.
Veterinaries support this opinion, reminding, however, that while playing with our fluffy devoted friends, sometimes we “trespass the inadmissible borders”.
“I understand when we are alone, we like to play with them, even talk to them and also kiss them. A lot of people can’t sleep without their pets, but please, don’t do such kind of things. Avoid of kissing pets and taking them to your bed… Let them feel free from time to time,” says veterinary Giorgi Rastia from the “ZooPlaza”.
