Profitable Blogging: Internet Markets Becoming Popular in Armenia

Vahagn Vardumyan, 33, is an artist. He has started preparing handmade jewelry and drawing on T-shirts since 2004. He opened his blog to show his products.

“I earn enough due to my work. The prices begin from 700 to 2000 AMD. I think it’s not so expensive because I really work hard on them. It takes much time, so I appreciate my work, especially when working with love,” says Vahagn.

He says though he promotes his handmade jewelry on his blog and uses also other online tools, however, people do not pay the price until they see the product on their own eyes.

“For instance, when one likes something, s/he prefers to come and see it in real, too. And the payment takes place from hand to hand. Unfortunately, we still have no such service, when you can buy something and do online payment,” mentions Vahagn.

That’s why Vahagn thinks to open an on-line shop and make an easy way for paying. But, he says, the idea will take some time.

Arik Shahumyan, 27, who represents the Shahumyan Media, specialized in web design and internet marketing, says that he wants to create the first and the biggest on-line shop for Armenians.

“I have such an idea and hope it will come true soon. We will represent the products sold in our best shops,” says Arik.

In the end of 2008 Arik opened the first on-line portal (www.bestbuy.am) where the best brands and shops in Armenia were represented. During three months more than 30 famous brands (Adidas, Oriflamme, Bakara, etc.) got interested in their appearance in the website. Arik is going to remake this website into an on-line shop.

However, he considers that the development of an on-line business in Armenia is first of all related to the payment system which needs solution.

“We don’t have any relationship with Pay Pal. First of all we need to have a trustful credit system. It is a little bit different in Armenia: people here want to know whom the product belongs to, who is the owner of the on-line shop and so on before they buy it. If we want to have an internet market, we should take into account these factors, too,” he says.

Lili Ghazaryan, 18, is a student and a future linguist. She has her small business and earns for her student needs. She has opened a blog in lifejournal and sells her handmade cell-phone bags, different jewelry, etc through her blog.

She works with her friend and they try to please their buyers. Sometimes they make little surprises for them. They are sure it attracts their customers.

“When I opened my blog, I was using it as a diary but then I decided to use it as so-called on-line shop and represent my works. And now we have a lot of buyers,” says Lili.

People mostly use the blogs as a platform to represent their works and try to earn money. Arik Shahumyan notes that not almost everyone has a blog and can use it in very different ways. But having a blog is not enough.

“If you want to earn money with your blog you should work on it. I mean no one will be interested in it and in your products if you don’t promote it. A lot of blogs don’t have visitors because their owners don’t think to share it or they don’t have interesting contexts,” he mentions.

Besides the on-line shops, there is another way of earning money by the internet. For instance, one can write a little article and receive money for that. A very interesting site called Payperpost.com has become an easy way of earning money for Hayk Melkonyan.

It’s already 3 months he has been writing short articles. “I write in English and French, though I don’t know French very well, but I’m allowed to translate it by the Google translator. The article should consist of no more than 50 words. Each piece is paid by $1, 5,” says Hayk.

Hayk is sure it is a good chance to improve one’s writing skills and to earn sitting at home.

“Nowadays it is easy and possible to earn at home. The internet affords such a chance. I have already written 3 short articles and now I am waiting for my little salary,” he says.
