Ten journalists from the regions of Armenia participated in the 3-day seminar-camp on the “New Media Tools of Mass Media” on March 4-6 in Aghveran city.

This event, organized by the “Journalists For the Future” NGO, was implemented within the framework of the “New Media Workshops for Media Society” project. The participants are journalists working for TV, print and online media outlets from a number of regions of Armenia. The workshop was moderated by leading experts Ivan Zassoursky and Arthur Papyan in the field of online resources.

“The workshop was aimed at expanding the knowledge and skills of the regional journalists in the sphere of alternative media tools and at stimulating activities of the regional media through the Internet,” says the project director Suren Deheryan. According to him, day after day, the usage of social networks and blogs gets more and more popular also in Armenia, and under the permanent flow of information on the Internet it is very important also the journalists’ involvement in it.

The participants theoretically as well as practically examined and discussed topics related to the transformation of mass media in digital environment, the impact of social networks and the ways and rules of communication on the Web domains. They signed up with Twitter mini blog and created an individual page on blogger.com. The participants learned also to use the latest tools of Facebook social network.

“It was very interesting to study the usage peculiarities of Twitter. I think that is very necessary to use new media resources to get involved in modern journalism,” says Nune Arevshatyan, the Gyumri correspondent of the “Aravot” daily and adds, “Thanks to Russian expert Ivan Zassoursky we learned also about the Russian new media developments.”

During the three days the experts presented the new media technologies necessary for universal reporter and possibilities of their usage in[[wysiwyg_imageupload::height=216,width=331]] professional activities.

“I learned how to post news and videos on the website, as well as to disseminate information on Twitter through phone,” says Armen Davtyan, the Kapan correspondent of the “Hraparak” daily.

As part of the workshop a common experimental resource was created on social network Facebook. After a short time this platform will be replaced by another open platform intended for news covering regional events.

In the nearest future, within the framework of the above mentioned project, JFF is planning to organize a similar seminar to involve participants also from other regions of Armenia.

The project is implemented with the financial support of the Social Transformation Program (Matra) of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the OSCE Office in Yerevan.
