During the workshop participants learned how to use open resources to collect reliable and vital data through search engines as well as discussed the methods to effectively delivering these data. In addition, the importance of infographics and data visualization in analytics and the media trends was presented.

“It was interesting to discuss structures of the stories we will design based on explanatory journalism. I am going to use the skills I have gained, particularly relevant to different types of visualization, in my job”, says journalist Astghik Gevorgyan, who is one of the workshop participants.

Another participant Tirayr Muradyan, journalist from Armtimes.com said: “The workshop provided plenty of new information enriching my knowledge which I will surely apply in my job since the multimedia tools are conquering long-form journalism.”

In the practical session of the workshop the participants identified topics of the stories they will design in the genre of explanatory journalism and received guidance from JFF experts. Stories being prepared within the framework of the project will involve data visualization and/or infographics and will be posted on the new Ampop.am innovative multimedia website launched by JFF, which is aimed at serving as an open platform for contributions and consultations between journalists, data visualization experts and other interested stakeholders.

“Work with open data and their visualization is a newly developing direction in journalism. This is a new, yet difficult but at the same time extremely interesting field for journalists. It was really nice to see the participants inspired by the provided topics and actively coming up with suggestions,” said the event organizer, JFF President Suren Deheryan.
