Armenian Media Digest, November 4-10

 1. “Fourth Sovereignty” (Chorrord Inqnishkhanutyun) Issued Instead of “Fourth Estate” (Chorrord Ishkhanutyun)

The opposition newspaper “Chorrord Ishkhanutyun” (Fourth Estate) has stopped being published since November 10. But instead of the former newspaper the editorial office started publishing a newspaper called “Chorrord Inknishkhanutyun” (Fourth Sovereignty). As А1Plus.am reports the day before four bailiffs from the Service for Compulsory Enforcement of Judicial Acts of the RA Justice Ministry visited the “CI” editorial office and handed the decisions of the SCEJA on prohibition of the newspaper publication.

According to the writ of execution (06.11.2009) of the Common Jurisdiction Court of First Instance of the Kentron and Nork-Marash communities of Yerevan the daily “Chorrord Ishkhanutyun” has been banned both by the official publisher of “Koghmnaki andzants M” LTD (“Unauthorized persons not admitted” LTD) and by any other organization or printing-house.

The editor of the newspaper Shogher Matevosyan introducing prehistory of the situation, said the online edition “7or.am“, that previously the Gind printing house brought a suit against the former publisher of the mentioned newspaper “Ogostos” (August) agency, for not paying its outstanding debt. When another organization (“Koghmnaki andzants M” LTD) though with the same editorial staff started publishing the newspaper, the court made a decision, to ban any other organization to publish “Chorrord Ishkhanutyun”. So the newspaper editorial board made a decision to be published under another name.

2. “ARKA” Agency’s New Websites

Aysor.am reports on launching new websites www.ambanks.am, www.bonds.am, www.anticrisis.am of “ARKA” news agency within the scales of a strategy on development of its business internet-directions since October 2009. According to the head of “ARKA” agency Konstantin Petrosov the financial and banking portal www.armbanks.am claims to be the leading Internet-edition in Armenia, which will cover the financial and banking sphere of the country. Along with prompt information, analytical materials, news about banks, insurance and credit agencies, statistical information will be available here.

On www.bond.am one can learn about the news of the stock market in Armenia, view the results of trade in stocks and bonds, government securities, get informed with the views and comments of participants and market experts. And www.anticrisis will allow to monitor the economic situation in Armenia, to learn about the government steps on the implementation of anti-crisis programs, to submit recommendations or comments on this or any other government decision.

“We would like the agency’s new projects not only have run in Armenian informational area but also help investors make a full idea about the situation of the financial-banking sector, the fund market, the anti-crisis measures taken by the government in Armenia,” said Konstantin Petrosov at the project presentation.

3. “Vrastan” the Only One in the World

As “7or.am” informs on November 5 during the budget hearings at the Armenian National Assembly (NA), Shirak Torosyan, deputy from the ruling Republican Party of Armenia, born in Georgia, spoke out against the funding of the Armenian language newspaper “Vrastan”(Georgia) published in Tbilisi, editor of which is Armenian Van Bayburt for many years. As Shirak Torosyan mentions, after the editor’s appointment as an adviser to the president of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili, he began to support the ongoing in Samtskhe region – Javakhq anti-Armenian policy of the authorities of the country.

The newspaper “Vrastan” turned out the only Armenian language newspaper justifying the verdict of the Georgian authorities against Chakhalyan, the only Armenian language newspaper in the world justifying the anti-Armenian policy of the Georgian authorities in Javakhk,” commented Torosyan.

4. Media Forum of CIS and Baltic Nations

As Armenpress reports, at the beginning of December of this year media forum of the CIS and the Baltic nations, chaired by news agency RIA Novosti, will be held in Moscow. This was announced by the head of the Presidential Center for Public Relations and Information Ara Saghatelyan today at a press conference in Yerevan. Ten media representatives from each country will participate in the conference.

According to Ara Saghatelyan the goal of this event will be “an attempt to restore horizontal relations between media representatives of the CIS countries and establish a common information field”. The participants of the event will discuss also issues of reduction of the print media circulation, restoration of public confidence towards the media. Concerning information security Saghatelyan noted that they have taken serious steps.

A technical system has been implemented to provide the security of Armenian governmental and private websites. Armenpress also reports, that Saghatelyan has talked on a study of about 90 Armenian government websites. Weak sides of those sites have been identified and presented to the relevant institutions. He also said that the center has worked out actions related to proper public policy information service of the RA, and all actions against Armenia’s interests become the subject of the study center. Thus, according to the source, for the last 2 months 1,300 anti-Armenian video-materials have been deleted from Youtube website.

5. “Hayk” Newspaper Anniversary

On November 4 the “Hayk” newspaper became 20 years old. This is the first independent newspaper of Independent Armenia. It has started functioning since 1989. The chief editor of the newspaper is Armen Baghdasaryan. The 8-page newspaper “Hayk” holds to opposition views.

6. Days of Russian Television in Yerevan As Armenpress reports, on November 15 to 19 “Days of Russian Television” will be held in Yerevan by the Fund of the Russian Academy of Television. The event will be held with the support of the President’s Office of Armenia and the Embassiy of the Republic of Armenia and the Russian Federation. Russia’s delegation is headed by Mikhail Shvydkoi, president of the Russian Academy of Television, the RF president’s representative for international cultural cooperation.

The Russian delegation includes also heads of TV channels, leading journalists of Russia. Within the frameworks of the “Days of Russian Television” in Armenia is expected to organize meetings with students of journalism department of Yerevan State University, representatives of the first public channel and other media representatives of Armenia.
