A Trap for Models: Cost of an Entry on the Podium

Every girl dreams to become a model. This choice is very promising at first sight. It gives glory, an easy way to earn money and a star environment. It seems that one has little to do – it is enough to show the clothes on which others are ready to spend lots of money to acquire.

In the West models’ average salary is $ 250-400 per hour. There are also famous models who earn even a few thousand dollars per hour and star models whose wages may reach to astronomical figures. For example, models Linda Evangelista and Gisele Bündchen recieve 20 000 dollars honorarium for an entry on the podium.

Apart from honorariums model business has also many other advantages. During photosessions the model’s photo appears on the covers of magazines, she wins recognition, glory, etc.

Millions of girls dream to take part in the Paris Fashion Week. It is not a bad dream but like childhood dreams it perishes when one learns that it’s impossible to become a photomodel, one must be born as a photomodel and always look to her weight.

According to Western standards, besides the 90-60-90 famous etalon of body symmetry, it is necessary also to have height not less than 177 cm, weight not more than 52 kg, a neck not short than 6cm. So glamour, shine, brand costume, magazine covers are only one side of the story.

This shining medal has also its opposite side. Daily hard trainings to create steady gait and to keep one’s figure, exhausting diets, strict regime and no less strict contractual raders with model companies and design studios.
According to these contracts models can be deprived of their wages, if they are stout or refuse to show dresses which are transparent or display the intimate parts of their body.[[wysiwyg_imageupload:15:]]

Some do not stand such a working pace. 21-year-old Brasilian model Ana Reston died during а fashion show on the podium because of overexhaustion. Famous model Naomi Campbell confesses that for getting away with the job stresses she has used cocaine for 5 years.

Conditions in Armenia perhaps are not so severe, beauty standards are healthier, but instead, the circles of companies engaged in fashion business are very narrow.

There are only a few design studios in our country, and even less shows organized by them. One of the most famous Armenian design studios – “Zatik” – rarely invites professional models to its shows. Mainly famous TV or theatre women, for example, Nazeni Hovhannisyan perform the clothes.

However, in spite of such a small market, there are many model training schools and organizing studios here. Among them is “Fes House” Center, which organizes a four-month course at 12 000 drams. There is no a specific condition for reception. People of any appearance and size can attend this center.

During the Armenian fashion shows appearance of the girls walking along the podium does not often meet the standards. Naturally wages are out of the standards, too. An entry on the podium often may be assessed 5000 drams. Both Armenian and foreign designers invite models mainly from Georgia and Russia to participate in Armenian fashion shows.
