On December 24 Georgian National Communications Commission (GNCC) will decide how TV stations Rustavi 2 and Imedi will be punished for violating Law on Broadcasting. Investigative journalism studio Monitor filed a complaint against the TV stations in November.
Journalist of studio Monitor Giorgi Mgeladze conducted monitoring of Rustavi 2 and Imedi in 2009-2010, he was trying to find out how well those TV channels were observing the regulations concerning advertising, sponsorship and TV shopping included in Law on Broadcasting. Journalist presented his findings in his investigative movie Advertisement beyond Law. The film is based on the examples of violation of the Law by the TV channels.
Regulation Department of GNCC studied the evidence presented by Monitor studio and during December 20 meeting the Department decided that 6 out of 7 facts indicated by Monitor were true.
Representatives of Rustavi 2 and Imedi TV channels who were present during the meeting said the violations weren’t taking place anymore and some of the allegations were not substantiated. Therefore, they believe the TV channels shouldn’t be punished. Representatives of the Monitor studio demanded that the TV channels be sanctioned and required to announce the violations themselves.
