Cinéma vérité. Jon Alpert Advises Armenian Collegues to Fight for Peace

“I shot a clip and it was like a miracle. That’s how I became a journalist – displaying problems of the society,” says Jon Alpert, American journalist and documentary filmmaker, who met students of journalism department of Yerevan State Linguistic University after V. Brusov on October 13.

Jon Alpert, who had a chance to interview Saddam Hussein and Fidel Castro in the course of his career, visited Armenia in the frames of Internews’s “Alternative Resources in Media” program and with the financial support of USAID.

The experienced reporter told the future journalists dangerous, amusing and exciting episodes of his life and presented some of his videos which were once shown on NBC, PBS and HBO.

“I didn’t study journalism. It’s the same when they say you must become a doctor and put a knife in your hand. In my case it was a camera,” says Jon. He used to be a taxi driver and never intended to become a journalist. But when Alpert first took a camera in his hands he realized that this thing was going to become a part of his life.

Vietnam, Cuba, USSR, China, Nicaragua, Philippines, Korea: this is not the full list of the countries that Alpert visited with his cam when a historical event took place. As a result, he received 15 Emmy and 3 duPont-Columbia awards for his documentaries.

When a journalist discovers himself in Hamburg he feels like a fashion designer in Paris, for Hamburg is one of the most important press cities in Europe. It is a home-town for Spiegel’s editorial, Gruner+Jahr Publishing headquarters which in 30 countries of the world publishes more than 500 magazines and newspapers such as Stern, Geo, National Geographic, NG Traveller, Elle and Cosmopolitan.

Before the financial crisis in 2009, the media market of Germany was seriously growing. But today, it’s online media that gains popularity. The hope that printing press can regain its former level, is fading.

Any self-respecting editorial develops the online version of it’s outlet, news feeds for mobile phones and tablet devices are developed, regarding the fact that in the near future these may be more profitable than the print version.

However, German online outlets encouraged the popularity increase of their print versions, the popularity they used to have before the digital era.

And untill now, it is more prestigious for a journalist in Germany to be a print press employee than that of an online outlet. At the same time, German editors believe that online press too should exercise high professionalism.

Court In Azerbaijan Over Assault On Foreign Journalist, Activist

Four men have gone on trial in Baku accused of assaulting a U.S. journalist and a British rights activist in the Azerbaijani capital four months ago, RFE/RL’s Azerbaijani Service reports.

U.S. journalist Amanda Erickson and British human rights activist Celia Davies say they were attacked on June 15 near the National Drama Theater in Baku as they were walking to their apartments.

The four men aged 20-22 — Adil Tagizadeh, Roman Hasanov, Vusal Qurbanov, and Nazim Huseynov — are accused of hooliganism and causing grievous bodily harm. If found guilty, they could be sentenced to between three and seven years in jail.

All four defendants pleaded not guilty. They denied attacking the two women or using abusive language, and said they were not drunk. They claimed they wanted to help the two women, who gave the impression of being drunk themselves.

“They were both drunk, I approached one of them, slapped her on the back and asked whether they needed any help,” said Tagizadeh. “They were frightened, began to shout and we realized they were foreigners. Then my cousin Nazim [Huseynov] gave her his mobile and told them to call 102 for the police if they were afraid. The woman threw the telephone on the ground and it broke. We didn’t hit them and…they began to run away.”

Iran Sentences U.S. Journalist and Enviromentalis to Eight Years in Prison

Freelance journalist Shane Bauer and environmentalist Josh Fattal have been sentenced to eight years in an Iranian prison for trumped-up charges of espionage and illegal entry into the country. The men were arrested two years ago while hiking near the poorly defined border between Iran and Iraq. Southern California native Sarah Shourd was also arrested, but has since been released.

The men’s families released a short statement yesterday, which reads in part:

Of the 751 days of Shane and Josh’s imprisonment, yesterday and today have been the most difficult for our families. Shane and Josh are innocent and have never posed any threat to the Islamic Republic of Iran, its government or its people.

The three hikers have strong California ties. Shroud grew up in Los Angeles, and lived in San Francisco after graduating from college. Bauer has written for the LA Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, and the San Francisco Bay Guardian. All are alumni of UC Berkeley.

Google+ hits 20 million mark in three weeks

Google’s latest social-networking foray has reportedly hit the 20 million member mark in just three weeks.

Google+ has had 20 million unique visitors since its release late last month, including 5 million from the U.S., according to data released today by research firm ComScore. Google apparently reached that milestone just a week after Google CEO Larry Page reported that the social network had reached 10 million visitors and had received “a ton of activity” with more than 1 billion items shared and received each day.

“It is definitely the fastest ascent to 20 million visitors that I can think of,” Andrew Lipsman, ComScore’s vice president of industry analysis, told the Los Angeles Times.

A Google spokesperson declined to address the report, saying the company does not comment on third-party metrics.

Google launched Google+ late last month not even in beta, letting in only a handful of users, who could later invite their friends and family. Page noted at the time that the service remains in a “field trial” mode, and with “a lot of barriers” to use it right now, but that the company is continuing to expand how many have access to it.

Despite its meteoric growth in its first three weeks, a population of 20 million pales in comparison with Facebook’s 750 million, half of whom log in daily.

Թուրքիայի արտաքին գործերի նախարար Ահմեթ Դավութօղլուն ուղղված նամակում Միյատովիչն իր դժգոհությունն է հայտնել մայիսի 2-ին Սահմանադրական դատարանի կողմից ընդունած`Մամուլի մասին օրենքում փոփոխություններ կատարելու վերաբերյալ որոշման դեմ, որոնք թույլ կտան քրեական գործեր հարուցել լրագրողների դեմ նրանց հրապարակումներից տարիներ անց: Օրենքի չեղյալ հայտարարված 26-րդ հոդվածը այդ ժամանակահատվածը սահմանափակում էր մինչև 2 ամիս`օրաթերթում և մինչև 4 ամիս` այլ տպագիր պարբերականում տպագրված հոդվածի համար:

«Եթե այս ամենը մնա անփոփոխ, ապա նշանակում է, որ քննադատորեն արտահայտվող լրագրողները մշտապես աշխատելու են դատական գործընթացների սպառնալիքի ներքո», – երեքշաբթի օրը լրագրողներին ասել է Միյատովիչը:

Բացի այդ Միյատովիչը նաև անհագստացած է կառավարության այն պլաններով, որոնք նախատեսում են ինտերնետի պարտադիր վերահսկողություն թուրքական օգտատերերի նկատմամբ: Ըստ այս նախագծի՝ ինտերնետից օգտվողները ստիպված կլինեն ընտրել համացանցի ֆիլտրման չորս փաթեթներից որևէ մեկը: Բոլոր փաթեթներն էլ արգելափակելու են որոշակի կայքեր, իսկ ֆիլտրման չափանիշները չեն հրապարակվելու:

Ղրղզստանում ձերբակալել են թուրք լրագրողի

Ղրղզստանի ոստիկանությունը ձերբակալել է թուրք լրագրողի, որին կասկածում են իսլամիստական ահաբեկչական խմբավորումների հետ կապի մեջ, հայտնում է Wednesday News-ը:

Ըստ Interfax լրատվական գործակալության՝ Ղրղզստանի ազգային անվտանգության գործակալները մայիսի 2-ին ձերբակալել են ազգությամբ թուրք Ալի Օսման Զոռին Թուրքիայի կառավարության խնդրանքով:

43-ամյա Զոռը 2010 թվականի ապրիլին ժամանել էր Ղրղզստան և դիմել երկրի կառավարությանը իրեն քաղաքական ապաստարան հատկացնելու խնդրանքով՝ պնդելով, որ նա հալածվում է թուրքական իշխանությունների կողմից:

Բիշքեքյան www.24.kg անկախ կայքը ենթադրում է, որ հալածանքների պատճառ կարող էին հանդիսանալ Զոռի բլոգերում և լրատվական հոդվածներում հրապարակված՝ երկրում հեղաշրջում կատարելու բազմաթիվ կոչերը:

Ղրղզական օրենքով նրան չեն կարող հանձնել Թուրքիային, քանի դեռ քննարկվում է քաղաքական ապաստարան հատկացնելու Զոռի խնդրանքը: Այս մասին հայտնել է մարդու իրավունքների պաշտպանության ղրղզական կազմակերպության ղեկավար Չոլպոն Ջակուպովան:

Reporters Without Borders Concerned with Press Situation in Armenia

Reporters Without Borders is concerned about all the libel actions being brought against Armenian newspapers and the disproportionate damages being demanded, which threaten their survival and create a climate that encourages self-censorship. This tendency to use lawsuits to throttle news media must be reined in.

The repeal of jail sentences for libel and slander in April 2010 was hailed as a democratic advance but judicial harassment of the media continues. There were 12 defamation actions during the first quarter of 2011 alone. Independent newspapers are the leading targets. The daily Jamanak is currently the subject of three different lawsuits. Haykakan Jamanak and Hraparak are also being sued.

In most cases the plaintiffs are politicians. On 18 April, Armenia’s highest appeal court ordered the news website Hetq, founded by the NGO Investigative Journalists, to pay Ijevan mayor Tavush Marz 450,000 drams (820 euros) in damages and publish a retraction. The suit was brought over a series of articles about embezzlement by local officials. Having exhausted all possibilities of appeal in Armenia, the NGO says it will take the case to the European Court of Human Rights.

Ադրբեջանական ոստիկանությունը ցրում է ընդդիմության ցույցը

Շաբաթ օրը ադրբեջանական ոստիկանությունը, ուժ գործադրելով, ավտոբուսների մեջ է լցրել Բաքվի Շատրվանների հրապարակի մոտ հավաքված ընդդիմության ներկայացուցիչներին, որոնք նախատեսում էին հակակառավարական ցույց կազմակերպել, սակայն իշխանությունների կողմից թույլտվություն չէին ստացել:

Ընդդիմության առաջնորդներից մեկը հայտարարել է, որ ներկա գտնվող մոտ 1000 հոգուց 200-ը ձերբակալվել են:

«Այսօրվա հավաքը ցույց տվեց, որ ադրբեջանական ժողովուրդը փոփոխություններ է ուզում և պատրաստ է գործել հանուն ժողովրդավարության», – ասել է ընդդիմադիր Մուսավաթ կուսակցության առաջնորդ Իսա Գամբարը Reuters-ի հետ հեռախոսազրույցում:
