Turkish author’s detention stirs NGO anger

The detention of prominent intellectual, author and publisher Ragıp Zarakolu on suspected charges of membership in an illegal organization have prompted a huge reaction from a variety of progressive nongovernmental organizations. Turkey Publishers’ Union, the Contemporary Journalists’ Association (ÇGD) and the Human

Rights Association (İHD) called for Zarakolu’s release after he was detained in an Oct. 29 raid for alleged involvement in the Kurdistan Communities Union (KCK), the alleged urban wing of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

His detention came one day after approximately 70 people, including Marmara University academic Büşra Ersanlı, were also detained for alleged KCK involvement.

Ragip Zarakolu is also the director of the Belge Publishing House, which has published numerous books on the oppression of the national minorities in Turkey and the Armenian Genocide.

Turkish Journalists Protest News Agency

The Journalists Union of Turkey, or TGS, protested what it called the increasing pressure, threats and harassment, the changing of working hours and other anti-employee practices at the Anatolia News Agency in a written statement Monday.

During the past week almost 70 people at Anatolia were forced to retire, TGS said in a press statement in front of the General Directorate of Anatolia News Agency in Ankara on Wednesday.

“Apart from forced retirements, only one day off per week was imposed. Irrelevant appointments, dismissals, several demands for written and oral defense statements and notes of warning have increased in the past weeks,” TGS Chairman Ercan İpekçi told news website Bianet.

On the other hand, Anatolia said the TGS and other union statements were defaming the agency and misleading the public, the Anatolia News Agency Executive Board said in a statement. Anatolia had a gap of 65 million Turkish Liras in its budget, and 85 percent of its spending went to staff salaries and expenses, the statement said, adding that retiring staff will receive all their rights. The infrastructure and technology of the agency were about to fall apart and a new system was needed, the statement said.

Ղրղզստանում ձերբակալել են թուրք լրագրողի

Ղրղզստանի ոստիկանությունը ձերբակալել է թուրք լրագրողի, որին կասկածում են իսլամիստական ահաբեկչական խմբավորումների հետ կապի մեջ, հայտնում է Wednesday News-ը:

Ըստ Interfax լրատվական գործակալության՝ Ղրղզստանի ազգային անվտանգության գործակալները մայիսի 2-ին ձերբակալել են ազգությամբ թուրք Ալի Օսման Զոռին Թուրքիայի կառավարության խնդրանքով:

43-ամյա Զոռը 2010 թվականի ապրիլին ժամանել էր Ղրղզստան և դիմել երկրի կառավարությանը իրեն քաղաքական ապաստարան հատկացնելու խնդրանքով՝ պնդելով, որ նա հալածվում է թուրքական իշխանությունների կողմից:

Բիշքեքյան www.24.kg անկախ կայքը ենթադրում է, որ հալածանքների պատճառ կարող էին հանդիսանալ Զոռի բլոգերում և լրատվական հոդվածներում հրապարակված՝ երկրում հեղաշրջում կատարելու բազմաթիվ կոչերը:

Ղրղզական օրենքով նրան չեն կարող հանձնել Թուրքիային, քանի դեռ քննարկվում է քաղաքական ապաստարան հատկացնելու Զոռի խնդրանքը: Այս մասին հայտնել է մարդու իրավունքների պաշտպանության ղրղզական կազմակերպության ղեկավար Չոլպոն Ջակուպովան:
