ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The U.S. Embassy in Armenia is pleased to announce that the Georgian Institute of Public Affairs (GIPA) is soliciting applications from Armenian citizens for a master’s degree program in Multimedia Journalism and Media Management offered by the Caucasus School of Journalism and Media Management (CSJMM).

The Multimedia Journalism and Media Management MA program gives students a solid foundation for critical and innovative thinking. It provides journalistic and managerial knowledge and skills to prepare for today’s multimedia environment. It also gives students a critical understanding of emerging concepts and media theories shaping the future role of journalists and media managers. A large component of the program will take place at the newly opened Multimedia Education Center (MEC).

A course entitled “Data Communication Skills” was organized

A seminar-course on “Data Journalism Skills” was held in Aghveran on November 24-25, organized by “Summary Media” in cooperation with the Friedrich Ebert Foundation (FES) in Armenia. The training was conducted by Suren Deheryan, Editor of Ampop.am data news website, and Astghik Gevorgyan, journalist of the same website.

Participants from various organizations and media outlets were introduced at the beginning of the course in a different format than usual. They were asked to draw an infographic about themselves in ten minutes, using as few words and as many pictures as possible.

Gradually approaching the main topic of the seminar, Suren Deheryan explained the necessity and importance of data journalism in the modern world.

German Press Code Translated into Armenian

The German Press Code was translated into Armenian and published within the framework of the “Cross border observations: reliable coverage of local elections in Lower Saxony and Armenia” program implemented by Berlin Journalism School and “Journalists for the Future” NGO in Armenia.

The translation was done on the basis of the full version of German Press Code approved by German Press Council on 13.03.2013.

The structure of the German press council has four members, two journalists associations and two publishers associations, who represent the majority of German newspapers and magazines. However, also newspapers who are not member of the publishers association will follow guidelines of the press council and publish their reprimands (official statement that the codex was violated) on certain articles.

Presentation of Ampop.am Multimedia Website Held

“Journalists For the Future” NGO in cooperation with the Armenian Branch of Friedrich Ebert Foundation held the presentation of Ampop.am data driven multimedia website October 20.

The event commenced with a welcome speech by Julia Bläsius, Director of Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung/Foundation Regional Office for South Caucasus and by Suren Deheryan, president of “Journalists for the Future” NGO.

According to Suren Deheryan this new online platform, combined from traditional and innovative media approaches, will provide topics of any field in more comprehensible and summed-up format involving data visualization, infographics, audiovisual stories and dozens of active hyperlinks to additional sources enabling the reader to more comprehensively study topic-related issues.

Welcoming the participants Julia Bläsius, representative of Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung/Foundation, expressed her enthusiasm on the project, “I really like the initiative. It fills the gap that exists in Armenia of providing information and data especially on social and economic topics in a balanced, neutral and accessed way.”

Take part in a program on local elections in Lower Saxony and Armenia – apply now!

“Cross border observations: reliable coverage of local elections in Lower Saxony and Armenia” is a one-week program in Berlin organized by the Berlin Journalism School for journalists from Armenia. During their stay – most likely from August 22nd to 28th – ten selected participants will gain insights concerning the political system of the Federal Republic of Germany and the way regional elections are held here. This will include lectures and a five day excursions to Lower Saxony, where regional elections take place on September 11th, 2016.

The participants will visit media outlets, campaign planers, opinion researchers and other institutions which are involved in the campaign as well as the election process itself. They will experience how German media is planning campaign coverage and work on concepts how to implement those experiences when covering their own elections. They will also discuss question like independence and objectivity of journalism and reflect their role in society.

The participants will work together on articles to be published or broadcasted in the media they are working for at home and on a program web page. By spending time and working together, the journalists can share knowledge of their nation’s media, exchange their experiences and expectations and form networks.

Digital Communication Network Exchange Program

Funded by the U.S. Department of State and implemented by World Learning, the Digital Communication Network exchange program is creating a collaborative network of journalists and communication professionals from across Europe and Central Asia, working together to strengthen communication skills through the development and dissemination of digital content. The program will focus on communication tools, and link, in an integrated fashion, journalism, social media, and civil society. 

Through this two-way exchange for communication professionals from Europe, Central Asia, and the United States, participants exchange ideas, strategies, and best practices regarding different facets of communication particularly as it applies to digital and online content. The program explores new models for public engagement while developing sustainable and enduring linkages with professional counterparts throughout Europe and Central Asia. 

A total of 25 participants will be selected through an open competition process to come to the United States for a four-week professional program scheduled for April 10th through May 7th, 2016. Participants should work and reside in one of the following countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Tajikistan, and Ukraine.

GIPA looks for the best Armenian candidates for an MA program in Multimedia in 2014/2016

The Georgian Institute of Public Affairs (GIPA) is pleased to announce scholarships for Armenian students to study multimedia journalism and media management at the Caucasus School of Journalism and Media Management (CSJMM) located in Tbilisi, Georgia.

The program includes five semesters of study from October 2014 to May 2016. The students will spend their first and fifth semesters in Yerevan and their second, third and fourth semesters in Tbilisi (January-December 2015).

While studying in Georgia, Armenian students will receive monthly stipends for housing and food expenses. Each student will also receive funding for an internship with a media organization abroad. All tuition costs of the program are funded by the U.S. Embassy in Armenia.

This master’s program is taught in English and is targeted for international audience. It gives students a solid foundation for critical and innovative thinking. It provides journalistic and managerial knowledge and skills adequate to the new multimedia environment. The program also gives students a critical understanding of emerging concepts and media theories shaping the future role of journalists and media managers.

“Internet Rights and Security” Workshop for NGO sector in Armenia

Journalists for the Future NGO (JFF) organizes a workshop entitled “Internet Rights and Security” with the financial support of OSCE Yerevan Office and Counterpart International Representation in Armenia within the framework of “Free, Reliable and Secure Internet Information for All” project being held on June 20-22, 2014, in Aghveran.

The training is envisaged for civil society representatives and aims to provide fundamental knowledge for the participants on legal boundaries of free expression on the Internet as well as on the evasion from information security issues and protection from undesirable intervention.

The workshop will conduct lawyer Ara Ghazaryan, information security expert Samvel Martirosyan and media expert Suren Deheryan.
